Brian Asawa

Brian Asawa (born October 1, 1966 in Fullerton near Los Angeles , California - † April 18, 2016 in Mission Hills , San Fernando Valley , California) was an American opera singer ( countertenor ).

Life

The Japanese singer's international career began in 1991 when he won a singing competition from the Metropolitan Opera New York and the San Francisco Opera . With the latter he made his debut in the same year in Hans Werner Henze's The betrayed sea . In 1992 roles in Puccini's Tosca and Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream followed . In 1992 he made his Met debut in Mozart's Ascanio in Alba . In 1994 he won the by Plácido Domingo launched Operalia contest. In the following years roles in opera houses around the world followed. He appeared in Handel's Serse , Tolomeo and Giulio Cesare , Britten's Death in Venice , Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea , Strauss' Die Fledermaus and Handel's Tolomeo .

Asawa was a nephew of the sculptor Ruth Asawa .
