Sylvia McNair (born June 23, 1956 in Mansfield , Ohio , USA ) is an American opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Sylvia McNair studied violin from the age of 7 to 23 . In 1978 she obtained a “Bachelor in Music” degree from Wheaton College ( Wheaton , Illinois ) and a “Master in Music” degree from Indiana University ( Bloomington ) in 1982 . Her career as a singer began in 1983 at the St. Louis Opera House , where she performed mainly in operas by Mozart and Gluck until 1989 . In 1984 she made her debut in Schwetzingen , 1987 in Vienna , 1988 in Lyon , Strasbourg and Amsterdam , 1989 in London and Glyndebourne , 1990 in Salzburg and Paris , 1991 in New York , 1992 in San Francisco , 1995 in Chicago and Santa Fe . She has now appeared on almost all of the world's major stages. In 1993 she won the Grammy Award in the Best Opera Recording category and in 1995 in the Best Classical Vocal Performance category. In 1997 she received an honorary doctorate from Westminster College and in 1998 from Indiana University. In 1999, she received the Ohio State Governor's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Entertainment .

Sylvia McNair was married to the artistic director of the Omaha Opera , Hal France , from 1986 to 2004 .

Sylvia McNair's operatic repertoire ranges from the baroque to the present day (including Monteverdi , Handel , Gluck , Mozart , Beethoven , Rossini , Verdi , Sullivan , Stravinsky , Corigliano ). She also sings sacred music , songs and jazz compositions. Their skills are documented on over 70 recordings, including a. with the conductors Claudio Abbado , John Eliot Gardiner , Bernard Haitink , Neville Marriner , Kurt Masur , Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Slatkin .
