Lawrence Brownlee
Lawrence Brownlee (born November 24, 1972 in Youngstown, Ohio ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ).
Youth and education
Brownlee grew up in a working class family, had a very musical childhood, played trumpet , guitar and drums and sang in a gospel choir . He made his first appearances with pop and show tunes in an amusement park in Sandusky . Brownlee received his bachelor's degree from Anderson University in Indiana and attended Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as part of his graduate studies. Here he studied with the soprano Costanza Cuccaro.
Career
Lawrence Brownlee's professional stage debut took place in 2002 as Almaviva in Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Virginia Opera . He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in a new production of this opera in 2007. The role of Count Almaviva has meanwhile become one of his best known and most famous, with appearances in Vienna , Milan , Berlin , Madrid , Dresden and Munich , Baden-Baden , Hamburg , Tokyo , New York City, Washington, DC , San Diego , Seattle and Boston . His career highlights include appearances at the Vienna State Opera , the Boston Lyric Opera and the Teatro Real in Madrid.
Brownlee appeared in Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri and La Cenerentola at La Scala in Milan , as Belfiore in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims in Brussels and as Tonio in Gaetano Donizetti's La fille du régiment at the Cincinnati Opera . In addition to Renée Fleming , he was also celebrated in Rossini's Armida and in the famous and challenging role of Tonio in La fille du régiment and as Arturo in Vincenzo Bellini's I puritani at the Metropolitan Opera.
In 2014, Lawrence Brownlee, Juan Diego Flórez and Javier Camarena were named "The Three Tenors", who represent "a new golden age for high male voices".
Brownlee has appeared in concerts with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony in Georg Friedrich Handel's Messiah . He has given recitals under the auspices of the Marilyn Horne Foundation and was featured at one of the foundation's gala concerts at Lincoln Center . In May 2010, Brownlee gave a concert with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves in the United States Supreme Court Building for the United States Supreme Court justices. He presented his album Spiritual Sketches, with new arrangements of traditional music, with Damien Sneed in recitals, including for an NPR Tiny Desk Concert .
Deviating from his usual repertoire, he sang the role of Syme in Lorin Maazel's opera 1984 at the Royal Opera House in London on May 3, 2005 . In 2015 he played the role of Charlie Parker in the premiere of Daniel Schnyder's opera Yardbird at Opera Philadelphia .
Brownlee in particular for his bel canto - repertoire known. Speight Jenkins, Seattle Opera General Manager , says: "There are other singers who sing this repertory very well, but I don't think anyone has a nicer sound or a rounder tone." Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato adds: “He is always at the service of music. His voice is just amazingly beautiful. The word 'honey' comes to mind. "
