Denyce Graves (born March 7, 1964 in Washington, DC ) is an American opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Life

After receiving positive attention in music lessons, she received a musical education at the Duke Ellington School. As a 14-year-old, she lived in Munich as an exchange student for three months.

In 1992 she gave Carmen at the Ravinia Festival under the direction of James Levines , a role that she took on even more often. This was the case with her first engagement at the Met in 1995 .

She sang for Bill Clinton in the White House , for George W. Bush at the inauguration. On 24 September 2001 she sang in the Washington National Cathedral The Lord's Prayer and America The Beautiful in devotion to the victims of September 11th .
