Opera Rara

Opera Rara is a British company dedicated to the performance of forgotten operas by Giacomo Meyerbeer , Gaetano Donizetti and other bel canto composers.

history

The company was founded in 1970 by the two Americans Patric Schmid and Don White in London. For many years the Opera Rara was supported by the "Peter Moore Foundation". In 1972 the Opera Rara realized the first project of Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera Il crociato in Egitto . In 1977, Gaetano Donizetti's Ugo, conte di Parigi was the company's first record.

The recordings, initially intended primarily to promote the performances of the operas, were accepted and bought by opera friends around the world. The label has since released numerous first recordings, including works by Saverio Mercadante , Giovanni Pacini , Jacques Offenbach , Giovanni Simone Mayr , Vincenzo Bellini , Gioacchino Rossini , Federico Ricci , Ferdinando Paër as well as recordings of the original versions of various operas by Giuseppe Verdi .

Artist

Both the performances and the recordings were partly cast by well-known soloists such as Renée Fleming , Jane Eaglen or Vesselina Kasarova . A long-term collaboration developed with many artists, including Yvonne Kenny , Della Jones , Diana Montague , Nelly Miricioiu , Jennifer Larmore , Carmen Giannattasio , Bruce Ford , Christian du Plessis and Alastair Miles . The conductors of the Opera Rara projects include a. David Parry , Alun Francis , James Judd and Charles Mackerras . In 2011 the conductor Mark Elder took over the artistic direction of Opera Rara.
