Della Jones

Della Jones (born April 13, 1946 in Neath , Wales ) is a Welsh opera and concert singer (mezzo-soprano). She was best known for her interpretations of works by Handel , Mozart , Rossini , Donizetti and Britten .

Life

In 1977 Della Jones was one of the first singers to record for Patric Schmid 's Opera Rara label . She was involved in the complete recordings of Donizetti's Ugo, conte di Parigi , Meyerbeer's Il crociato in Egitto and Rossini's Ricciardo e Zoraide , and recorded a solo recital called Della Jones Sings Donizetti . She has sung on record under numerous famous conductors, such as Daniel Barenboim (in Le nozze di Figaro ), Charles Mackerras ( Elgars Sea Pictures ) and Leonard Bernstein ( Candide ). For Chandos Records she recorded a number of phonograms, including Great Operatic Arias - Della Jones , Rossini's Stabat Mater and sang Popova in William Walton's The Bear . For Collins she sang the role of Mrs. Herring in Britten's Albert Herring , for Virgin Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream .

In 1993 she sang at the Last Night of the Proms . The patriotic rule, Britannia! she gave her a Welsh touch when she turned up her dress skirt, on the inside of which the Welsh dragon was emblazoned.
