first act

Queen Emma poisoned her husband, King Lotario. To the annoyance of Folco, who instigated them to do so, no one from his family is appointed as his successor, but the young Prince Luigi, whose guardian Count Ugo has been appointed. Ugo travels to Aquitaine to woo Luigi for Princess Bianca. During this visit he falls in love with her sister Adelia. Bianca herself falls in love with Ugo. Even before the altar, she refuses to marry Luigi and confesses her feelings for Ugo. Luigi feels betrayed by Ugo and has him thrown into dungeon.

Second act

Ugo rejects Bianca. He is freed from prison by soldiers who are ready to face Luigi under his leadership. Ugo, on the other hand, wants to be loyal and goes with Adelia to Luigi to introduce her as his bride. Luigi arranges the wedding of Ugo and Adelia. Folco persuades Bianca to pour poison into Ugo's mug. When the old Queen Emma finds out about it and calls for help, Bianca herself drinks the deadly poison.
