Marcello Giordani

Marcello Giordani , born as Marcello Guagliardo ( January 25, 1963 in Augusta , Sicily - October 5, 2019 there ) was an Italian opera singer with a tenor voice .
life and work
Giordani won the Spoleto Singing Competition in 1986 and made his debut there that same year as Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto . He had a broad repertoire, especially in the Italian subject, ranging from Belcanto Bellinis, Donizettis and Rossinis to the more dramatic roles of Giuseppe Verdi to the verismo operas of Leoncavallo, Mascagni and Puccini. He also took on a number of roles in the French subject , for example in works by Hector Berlioz , Georges Bizet , Charles Gounod , Jules Massenet or Giacomo Meyerbeer , more rarely in works in other languages. Giordani has appeared at the most important opera houses in the world, over 240 times at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, 72 times at the Vienna State Opera , where he was seen and heard in 14 roles, at the Royal Opera House in London and on La Scala in Milan .
He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1992. At the premiere of I Puritani in 1994, he sang alongside Edita Gruberova . In 2016 he made his state opera role debuts as Calaf in Turandot and as Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut with Anna Netrebko as partner. In October 2016 he had his last appearance at the Vienna State Opera as Radames in Aida .
Giordani could also be heard in many concert halls, especially in concert performances of operas, but also as a soloist in various choral orchestral works - for example in the Requien by Hector Berlioz and Giuseppe Verdi .
Giordani tried very hard for the offspring. In 2010 he founded a foundation, the “Marcello Giordani Foundation”, which aims to support young singers at the beginning of their careers. In 2011, the Marcello Giordani singing competition took place in Sicily for the first time .
He met his future wife, Wilma, in Lucerne in 1988 . The couple married in 1990 and lived in New York and Augusta. They had two sons. Giordani died in October 2019 at the age of 56 in his hometown of complications from a heart attack .
