Franco Calabrese

Franco Calabrese (born July 22, 1923 in Palermo , † November 13, 1992 in Lucca ) was an Italian opera singer (bass baritone).

Life

Calabrese grew up in Lucca and studied at the Istituto Luigi Boccherini . In 1947 he made his debut at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze . From 1953 he was engaged at the Teatro alla Scala , later also at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma . He became known as an interpreter of Mozart and Rossini operas . Important roles were the Doctor in Pelléas et Mélisande , Geronio in Il turco in Italia , Count Robinson in Il matrimonio segreto , Géronte in Manon Lescaut , the Marchese di Calatrava in La forza del destino , Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte and Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro . In 1955 he sang Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera .

He was the brother of the bassist Paolo Montarsolo (* 1925).
