The Palácio Ferreira Pinto Basto is a former city palace in the center of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It determines the south side of Largo do Chiado .

The palace was built in 1791 by the merchant Francisco Higíno Dias Ferreira. After his death, João Lannes, later Duque de Montebelo and French minister, resided there. After the invasion of French troops, General Junot moved in , who, according to tradition, felt disturbed by the ringing of bells in the two neighboring churches of Encarnação and Loreto. From 1808 the French embassy was in the building, from 1809 to 1816 the British commissariat.

In 1827 the factory owner and merchant José Ferreira Pinto Basto, founder of Fábrica da Vista Alegre , acquired the palace, had the interior of the house artistically redesigned and gave it its present appearance. In 1843 the house became the seat of the Banco do Porto. From 1844 to 1848 it served as a luxury hotel under the name Hotel Peninsular. From 1860 it was the seat of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino , from 1868 the State Ministry, from 1889 the seat of the Caminhos de Ferro da Beira Alta. It was later used as a hotel again under the names Hotel Mata and Hotel Itália.

At the end of the 19th century Reinaldo Pinto Basto, grandson of the entrepreneur José Ferreira Pinto Basto, sold to the commandant Nunes Teixeira. In 1902 the house came into the possession of the Viscondessa de Valmor, D. Josefina Clarisse de Oliveira. The insurance company A Mundial has been there since 1913. During this time, the owners changed several times.
