The industrialist, farmer and businessman José Ferreira Pinto Basto founded the company in Ílhavo in 1824 , motivated by the success of glass production in Marinha Grande . He was also politically active, particularly on the side of the Liberals in the Liberal Revolution in Portugal . In 1812 he had acquired the Quinta da Ermida manor near the Ria de Aveiro , and shortly afterwards the surrounding lands. Among them was the Quinta da Vista Alegre , with the palace building, a chapel and some buildings around a square. Basto had his factory built there, to which residential quarters and other facilities were later added. In 1824 he received approval from King D. João VI , and five years later permission to use the title Real Fábrica (English: Royal Factory) in recognition of the design and quality of the products by the King. Glass production was further refined, for which foreign specialists were also employed. As a result, Vista Alegre glasses gained a reputation.

In 1851 Vista Alegre was represented at the first world exhibition , in the Crystal Palace in London. In 1852 King D. Fernando II visited the factory and ordered a large dinner service. In 1867 Vista Alegre received an international award for the first time at the Paris World Exhibition. The porcelain production, which began in 1832, grew in importance over the years, so that in 1880 the original glass production was discontinued.

In 1964, the family business opened the Vista Alegre Historical Museum, where special pieces have been on display since then, such as models from deliveries to the British royal family .

After the growing company was primarily geared towards the Portuguese market and only supplied to selected customers abroad, sales figures began to stagnate since the 1980s. In the course of the 1990s, Vista Alegre expanded its production capacities and began to focus on exports. In 1986 the company expanded to Spain with the establishment of Vista Alegre España . Since 1987 Vista Alegre has been listed on the stock exchanges ( Bolsa de Valores ) in Lisbon and Porto. After merging with the ceramics export company Cerexport in 1997, exports increased significantly.

In 2001 Vista Alegre merged with the traditional Portuguese company Atlantis, a crystal glass manufacturer founded in 1944. Since 2009 the company has been majority owned by the investment and holding company Visabeira .
