Eduardo Nery

Eduardo Jorge Nery de Oliveira (born September 2, 1938 in Figueira da Foz , † March 2, 2013 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese painter .

life and work

He was born in 1938 in the seaside resort of Figueira da Foz, the son of the writer Maria Elisa Nery de Oliveira and the engineer Sebastião José de Oliveira. In 1939 the family moved to Lisbon, where Nery attended high school as a teenager and made his first experiences as a photographer. After completing his painting studies at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa , which he began in 1956 , he also turned to architecture and the design of public spaces, especially from 1966 onwards. Various wall decorations were made by him, for example at Edifício Franjinhas in 1969 or in the Campo Grande subway station in 1993.

His work is characterized by the search for elastic, vibrating space, originally influenced by modern illusionism and the developments of the 1960s in the field of optics . His metaphysical images are in dialogue with the universe, also in his photographs, with which, as in some of his picture series, he sometimes depicts landscapes in an abstract manner.

His works include a. exhibited in the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis in Porto , and in the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon.

On June 10, 2012, the national holiday of Portugal Day , Nery was awarded the Order of Infante Dom Henrique by President Cavaco Silva with the rank of Grand Officer.

Eduardo Nery died in Lisbon on the morning of March 2, 2013. He has recently had various health problems, but his family was surprised by his sudden death. A more precise cause of death has not been disclosed.
