The Largo de Dona Estefânia is a square in the northern inner city of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It was laid out in 1877 as an extension of the Rua de Dona Estefânia, which crosses it in a south-north direction . Outgoing streets are Rua Pascoal de Melo , Avenida Casal Ribeiro and Rua Almirante Barroso .
The square has been named since April 19, 1893, like the crossing street and the nearby Hospital de Dona Estefânia , after Stephanie von Hohenzollern (1837-1859), Queen of Portugal since her marriage in 1858 to Pedro V.
In 1950 a statue by the sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro was moved to the center of the square . It dates from 1771 and shows the Roman sea god Neptune .
