Alfredo Bensaúde

Alfredo Bensaúde (born March 4, 1856 in Ponta Delgada , † January 1, 1941 Ibid) was a Portuguese mineralogist and university professor. He was the founder and first director of the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon .

Life

Bensaúde was the eldest son of the factory owner José Bensaude (1835–1922) , who came from a Jewish family . He attended school in Ponta Delgada and at the age of 15 went to Germany to continue his education, where he attended the Technical University in Hanover and the Clausthal mining academy . In Clausthal he was a member of the Corps Montania . In 1878 he completed his studies as an engineer. In 1881 he received his doctorate in mineralogy from the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. phil. In 1884 he settled in Lisbon, where he was appointed Professor of Mineralogy and Geology at the Instituto Industrial e Comercial . Bensaude reorganized the course based on the German model and introduced, among other things, the teaching of crystallography and the modern techniques of petrography in Portugal. From 1893 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon.

He was later a professor and from 1911 to 1922 first director of the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. In 1922 he retired to his hometown of Ponta Delgada in the Azores.
