Igreja do Loreto

The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Loreto ("Church of Our Lady of Loreto"), also called Igreja dos Italianos , is a Roman Catholic parish church in the center of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It is located on the north side of Largo do Chiado . The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto .

history

The first Loreto church was built in 1522 for the city's Venetian and Genoese merchants. The church was badly damaged in an earthquake on November 1, 1755 and rebuilt in 1785 under the direction of the architect José da Costa e Silva . The single-nave church has twelve side chapels based on the model of the twelve apostles . On the facade there is the papal coat of arms above a portrait of the Blessed Mother , which is carried by two angels. The body set up by an unknown organ builder organ dates from the 18th century.
