The Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro is a central place on the northeastern edge of the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It was created between 1938 and 1949 and was initially called Praça do Areeiro from 1947 . In memory of Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro (1934–1980) who died in a plane crash , it was given its current name on April 5, 1982.

history

The square is located in the municipality of Areeiro . It was designed as the northern end of the Avenida Almirante Reis avenue . At the same time, according to the rulers of the Estado Novo, it should serve as the gateway to a new Lisbon, the “capital of the empire”. From here, Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho leads to Lisbon-Portela Airport , which was newly built at the end of the 1930s . The square is also part of a superordinate ring road that leads from Avenidas Novas to the east.

The development of the square is uniform and exemplifies the mixing of modern rationality and monumentality with traditional elements in the architecture of the Estado Novo. A ten-story residential tower in the line of sight of Avenida Almirante Reis forms the crown of the city . A monument to Francisco Sá Carneiro was erected in the middle of the square.
