history

The street was laid out from 1947 as a northern extension of Avenida Almirante Reis to better connect the airport to the city center. It was originally called Avenida do Aeroporto . In July 1956, the suggested Aero Club de Portugal on the road in honor of the two most important aviation pioneers of the country Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho (1869-1959) and Artur de Sacadura Freire Cabral (1881-1924) in Avenida Gago Coutinho - Sacadura Cabral rename . The responsible commission rejected the proposal, referring to the practice of naming streets only after deceased people and the Avenida Sacadura Cabral in the municipality of São João de Deus , which was named in 1926 .

On the day after Gago Coutinho's death in February 1959, City Councilor Dr. Baêta Henriques submitted the proposal again. The Comissão de Toponímia waited and suggested a more important square or street in the municipalities of Ajuda or Alcântara , where Gago Coutinho lived for most of his life, but then agreed on 23 June 1959 to rename Avenida do Aeroporto . It came into force on January 2, 1960.

The development of the street is characterized by small town villas in which various national institutions are based. She is the namesake for the story The Incredible War in Avenida Gago Coutinho (Orig .: A Inaudita Guerra da Avenida Gago Coutinho ) by Mário de Carvalho from 1983.
