The Avenida Almirante Reis is a main road in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . Along with Avenida da Liberdade, it is the second main thoroughfare in the city center and extends Rua da Palma from Praça Martim Moniz in a northerly direction to Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro . It crosses the municipalities of Anjos and Areeiro .

history

The road lies in the valley between Pena and Graça . It was planned as a northern extension of Rua da Palma to the bypass Estrada da Circunvalação . After building it received initially the name of Avenida dos Anjos and later in honor of Queen Amélia in Avenida Dona Amélia renamed. In the course of the renaming of the streets with reference to the Portuguese royal family after the proclamation of the republic , it was given the name of Naval Admiral Carlos Cândido dos Reis (1852-1910) on October 13, 1910 , who on the eve of the revolution believed in the alleged failure of the coup had taken life. The name refers to the street's history as the scene of Republican meetings and demonstrations from 1908 to 1910.

description

The development of the street is characterized by residential and commercial buildings in block development. The street context is interrupted by the Praça do Chile and the Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques . In terms of traffic, it is accessible through the Linha Verde of the Lisbon Metro, which follows the course of the street between the Martim Moniz and Areeiro stations .
