It was laid out at the beginning of the 1930s as a showplace for the repressive Estado Novo regime and on March 23, 1932, it was named after the first Portuguese king, Alfonso I (1109 (?) - 1185; Portuguese : Dom Afonso Henriques).
Development
The course is about 120 meters long and covers an area of about 3.5 hectares. Several blocks of flats were built on the two long sides of the square, which rise to the east and west. The urban development on the western hill is formed by the Instituto Superior Técnico built by Duarte Pacheco , on the eastern hill by the monumental fountain Fonte Luminosa . In 1952 the monumental cinema Cinema Império was built on the south side of the Alameda. It now serves as a church.
