The Linha Vermelha (also called Linha do Oriente ) is one of the four subway lines of the Lisbon Metro . With a length of 12 kilometers it is the second longest line, and with opening dates between 1998 and 2012 the youngest of the entire network. It currently comprises twelve stations and is shown in red on the route network map.

history

First stage

On the occasion of the 1998 World Exhibition , the first leg of the line between Oriente and Alameda was put into operation on May 19, three days before the exhibition opened. The reason for the construction of the line was the connection of the exhibition area, today's Parque das Nações around the Oriente station, with the existing network, which was guaranteed at the Alameda station, which is also served by Linha Verde . Later in operation due to subsidence in the train stations in Cabo Ruivo and Olivais , Cabo Ruivo on July 18, 1998, Olivais on November 7 of the same year.

Second stage

Since the connection with the rest of the network with the previous route was rather unsatisfactory, the extension from Alameda to São Sebastião was put into operation on August 29, 2009 . Since then, all four lines have been linked for the first time: In São Sebastião the Linha Vermelha is connected to the Linha Azul , and in the Saldanha station, also opened in 2009, to the Linha Amarela .

Third stage

In 2007 the construction of the third stage, the northern, 3.3 kilometer long extension from Oriente to the airport via Moscavide , began. Completion was originally scheduled for 2011. Due to legal proceedings by unsuccessful construction companies, it was delayed by about a year and a half. The section finally went into operation on July 17, 2012. The cost of the construction amounted to 218 million euros.

connections

Four of the twelve stations on the line are transfer points to other lines. While you can change to the other subway lines in the three inner city stations São Sebastião, Saldanha and Alameda, the Oriente station is connected to the station of the same name . The Olaias stop is only 300 meters west of the Linha de Cintura Chelas station , but there are currently no connecting routes.

future

Possible line network of the Lisbon Metro 2020 with the new branches of the Linha Vermelha

Planned expansions

  • The line is to be extended westward via the center of Campolide and Campo de Ourique to the final stop Alvito , where REFER and Fertagus are planning a stop under the project name Quinta do Jacinto on Linha do Sul .
  • After the Campo de Ourique, another line is to be built via Estrela to Alcântara, where a traffic junction is to be created together with a new train station for the Linha de Cascais and the Linha de Cintura. Since the project has been put on hold due to the financial situation of Portugal, it has not been clarified whether the route to Alcântara should be used by the Linha Vermelha or the Linha Amarela. The Linha Amarela would reach Estrela via an extension from Rato .
  • A branch line via Portela to Sacavém is to be built from the Moscavide station .

Possible extensions

From the airport, the line could be led via Campo Grande and Telheiras and three new stations ( Fernando Namora , Senhora da Luz , Padre Cruz ) to Pontinha der Linha Azul . Then it would follow the blue line to Amadora Este / Reboleira , and then be extended via two stations in Amadora's city center to the intended end point at the Sintra / Amadora Central Hospital.

New transport hubs

In the course of the expansion of the Linha de Cintura between Roma-Areeiro and Braço de Prata, the Chelas station would have to be rebuilt. It is planned to move the station to the north in order to create a direct transfer point Chelas / Olaias.
