history

The main church of Moscavide

Moscavide is a relatively young freguesia. It was founded on March 23, 1928 by Decreto n ° 15 222 from parts of the freguesias Santa Maria dos Olivais and Sacavém and remained in the county of Loures. It included the villages of Encarnação , Marcos and Beirolas . In the 1940s, however, the municipality gave its eastern part, Beirolas , again to Lisbon, more precisely to the municipality of Olivais. The name "Moscavide" probably comes from the Arabic word maskabat , which means sowing; an indication that people must have lived in the Moscavides area centuries ago.

Due to the rising housing prices in the capital and the expansion of the Linha do Norte railway line , the population increased sharply in the decades that followed. In the meantime, the municipality had the highest population density in the entire district of Loures. With the Decreto n ° 45 637 of April 3, 1964 the municipality of Moscavide was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

In the south of the freguesia, in an area that also includes the freguesias of Santa Maria dos Olivais and Sacavém, the Expo 98 exhibition grounds were built in the mid-1990s . Even after the world exhibition, now renamed Parque das Nações , the area is increasingly becoming a center of attraction in the Portuguese capital. The inhabitants of the Parque das Nações have therefore been fighting for some time to found their own freguesia called Oriente in order to minimize administrative corridors within the area between the three freguesias or to be able to set up their own administration. The municipal administration of Moscavide has opposed the project so far, because in their opinion essential parts of the Moscavide area would be affected, and they also fear tax losses.
