The Praça do Chile is a square in the northern inner city of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is formed from the intersection of Rua Morais Soares , Avenida Almirante Reis and Rua António Pereira Carrilho .

The square was originally part of Avenida Almirante Reis. With the creation of a circular square, the desire arose for an independent name. On October 25, 1928, a councilor submitted the proposal to the Câmara Municipal to name the square after the South American Republic of Chile . The Câmara followed him by majority on December 6, 1928. The houses Avenida Almirante Reis Nº 150, 155, 170 to 174 and 176 were assigned to the new square.

In the center of the square, a statue by the Chilean sculptor Guilherme de Córdoba was unveiled on October 17, 1950 . It shows the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan and was a gift from the Chilean government. An identical statue can be found in Punta Arenas . The monument replaced a statue of Neptune that now stands on Largo de Dona Estefânia .

The square is accessible to traffic through the Arroios subway station .
