Jóan Símun Edmundsson (born July 26, 1991 in Toftir ) is a Faroese football player . He plays for Arminia Bielefeld and the Faroese national team

Edmundsson began his career at B68 Toftir , for whose first team he played in 2008 at the age of 17 and was one of the regulars from the start. In September 2009 he completed a four-day training session at Manchester City , with other British and Scandinavian clubs showing interest in him.

In December 2009 he moved to Newcastle United's youth academy on loan and signed a long-term contract during the 2010 summer break. After initially playing for the Newcastle United reserve team, he was loaned out to Gateshead FC , who played in the Conference National , in January 2011 to get more match practice. He played his first league game on the 29th matchday in a 2-2 draw against the Kidderminster Harriers . Overall, he ran on in five games for the club; after his return to Newcastle United he came to no further appearances in the first team.

At the beginning of 2012, Edmundsson completed a trial training session with the Norwegian first division club Viking Stavanger and was signed for the next two years in mid-February. He played his first competitive game on matchday five in the away game against Strømsgodset Toppfotball , when he came on in the 62nd minute for King Gyan when the final score was 0-1. In September 2012 he was loaned to the Danish second division club FC Fredericia . In early 2014 he signed a contract with AB Argir and returned to the Faroe Islands. During the summer break he moved to city rivals HB Tórshavn . Another six months later he moved to Vejle BK in the second Danish division. The season ended in fifth place.

From 2016 Edmundsson ran for the first division club Odense BK . In the first season, the seventh place was taken. In 2016/17 Edmundsson was one of the regular players and achieved relegation with the team in the relegation round after eleventh place in the preliminary round.

For the 2018/19 season Edmundsson moved to Germany to join the second division Arminia Bielefeld and received a contract that runs until 2020. He is the first player from the Faroe Islands in German professional football. On August 5, 2018, he scored his first goal for Ostwestfalen in his debut on the first match day in the Voith Arena against 1. FC Heidenheim with the goal to make it 1-1.

European Cup

In the 2014/15 season, Edmundsson played four games in the Champions League . He made his debut in the first qualifying round in a 1-1 away game against Lincoln Red Imps FC . At 5-2 in the second leg, Edmundsson scored the goal to make it 3-0. In the second qualifying round, HB was eliminated with 0: 3 and 1: 3 against FK Partizan Belgrade .

National team

Edmundsson is the Faroe Islands international and previously played for the U17 , U19 and U21 teams.

He made his senior national team debut on August 12, 2009 in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in the 1-0 defeat by France in Tórshavn, when he came on for Christian Holst in the 29th minute . His first goal for the senior national team he scored on August 11, 2010 in Tallinn to 1-0 lead in the 2-1 defeat against Estonia in qualifying for the European Championship 2012 ; it was the very first goal in qualifying.

In qualifying for the 2016 European Championship , he scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 away win against Greece on November 14, 2014 .
