The Avenida de Roma is a main thoroughfare in the northern center of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It leads from Praça de Londres in a north-westerly direction to Avenida do Brasil . It crosses the municipalities of Alvalade and Areeiro . It crosses the Linha de Cintura ring line and forms the Praça de Alvalade at the intersection with Avenida da Igreja .

history

The street was designed in the late 1920s under the plan name Avenida nº 19 . On December 27, 1930, the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon gave it the name of the Italian capital Rome . The dedication is in the context of a phase of the Estado Novo in which nationalism gave itself the appearance of formal cosmopolitanism, especially towards the ideas and values of Europe. This practice was later continued in the immediate vicinity of the Avenida de Roma with streets and squares named after other European capitals (London, Madrid, Paris).

description

The Escola Eugénio dos Santos, the former Cinema Alvalade, the Hotel Roma and the former Cinema Roma (today: Fórum Lisboa) are on the street. It is accessible through the Linha Verde of the Lisbon Metro, which follows the course of the road between the Roma and Alvalade stations . The western exit of Roma-Areeiro train station is here.
