E depois do Adeus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

E depois do Adeus (in German: "And after parting") is a Portuguese song with the text by José Niza and the melody by Paulo de Carvalho , which took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 in Brighton for Portugal.

The song is a ballad about a man who is about to end a relationship. He tells his lover how he feels and compares her to a picked flower that he peeled off, which means the relationship was comparatively short-lived. He also explains the nature of love itself, which is "winning and losing".

Although the song performed by Paulo de Carvalho finished last in the competition in Brighton, it achieved considerable fame as the first of the two secret signals with which the Carnation Revolution began in Portugal against the regime of the Estado Novo under Marcelo Caetano . The other secret sign was Grândola, Vila Morena , a battle song by the anti-fascist songwriter José Afonso . This was the definitive signal for the coup plotters to take control of strategically important parts of the country. E depois do Adeus was broadcast on April 24, 1974 at 10:55 pm by Emissores Associados de Lisboa (now Rádio Renascença ).
