Borda do Campo is a former municipality in Portugal , in the Figueira da Foz district .
geography
18 km away from Figueira da Foz, the municipality is located at the southeastern tip of the Figueira district. Above all, the wide rice fields and the various watercourses in the middle of the agricultural areas and strips wooded by pine and deciduous trees make up the typical appearance of the landscape in the municipality.
history
The oldest place in the former municipality is Porto Godinho, founded in 987. The area belonged to the Seiça monastery . It was not until 1989 that the municipality became an independent administrative area, having previously always been part of the municipality of Paião . In connection with the reorganization of the administrative structure of Portugal , the municipality of Borda do Campo was dissolved again in 2013 and reincorporated into the municipality of Paião.
Culture, sports and sights
Historic water mills, some of which are still in operation, can be visited in the municipality, as well as various chapels, in particular the church of Capela de Nossa Srª da Graça in Porto Godinho , built in 1670 .
Every year in May , the traditional skill and speed boat race Corrida das Barcas takes place at the bridge over the Rio Pranto , on the border between the districts of Soure and Figueira da Foz, with the Barcas Chatas (German: annoying boats) , river barges based on historical models, which are similar in handling to the gondolas of Venice . Teams of younger and older crews compete against each other, also as a symbol of the tension between youthful strength and older experience. The race is organized by the youth organization Juventude BordaCampense (English: Youth of Borda do Campo), which also organizes various culinary festivals.
Since 1979, the non-profit Concelho dos Moradores da Borda do Campo (German: Council of the Residents of Borda do Campo) has been an important civil society association that is responsible for a large number of activities and institutions of a social, cultural and sporting nature in the community.
