Pist.On is an American alternative metal band from New York City that was formed in 1993. Other spellings of the name are Pist * On , Pist-On and, initially and later, Piston under Atlantic Records .

history

The band was formed in Brooklyn in 1993 . The core of the group consisted of singer and guitarist Henry Font and bassist Val.ium. In the same year a first demo was released , which consists of two songs. Dave Femia can then be heard as the drummer. The band had originally planned the recording with Josh Silver , but Silver was too busy with Life of Agony that the group had recorded the demo with another producer. A short time later, the demo Urine the Money was recorded with Silver as a producer in the New York Rabbi in the Sky Studios. In 1995 the group also contributed the song Exhume Her to the sampler Metal Massacre XII . In May 1996 the group signed a recording deal with Firce Recordings.

In the same year, the debut album Number One , which had been produced by Silver, was released. The recordings for this had already taken place in August 1995 in the Systems Two studio in Brooklyn, but the release was postponed due to the search for a label and negotiations with them. The album includes a cover version of The Smiths song Shoplifters of the World Unite . The release in Europe took place at Music for Nations .

In the winter of 1996 the band went on a European tour with Life of Agony. Due to the success of the album, Atlantic Records became aware of the group, about which the record was re-released worldwide. Gray Flap was released as a single . The album was able to achieve a gold record in the USA . After the album was released, guitarist Paul Poulos and drummer Danny Jam Kavadlo left the cast. The former was replaced by Burton Gans and the latter by Jeff McManus.

In 1996 and 1997 the band played over 200 concerts in the Northeast and Midwest of the United States. After signing the contract with Atlantic Records, she performed with Marilyn Manson (including in Hamburg), Type O Negative and Queensrÿche . In 1997 the band could be seen at the Bizzarre Festival and the Dynamo Open Air as well as in Munich. During a US tour with Fu Manchu , McManus complained of chronic muscle pain, whereupon he was diagnosed with a respiratory disease. The remaining concerts of the tour were completed with Type-O-Negative drummer Johnny Kelly .

In 1999, Mayhem Records released the second album $ ell Out , which the band had given the title based on their experience with Atlantic Records. The publication was delayed on the one hand by the illness of Jeff McManus, on the other hand by the lack of a suitable producer. The album was finally recorded under the direction of Daniel Rey at Baby Monster Studios and Spa Recording in New York, but it was hardly advertised. At the end of the year, McManus left the cast. In summer 2001 they went on a tour through Europe to test new material contained on the EP Saves , produced by Michael Marciano . At that time the band was also represented at the Graspop Metal Meeting .

In August of the same year, the bassist left Val.ium after a tour of Europe, Pist. On, whereupon the band's activities came to a standstill without officially announcing a breakup. In 2015 the band resumed their activity and consisted of Font, Gans and McManus from bassist Jack Hanley. The first appearances were planned for June 2018 in the form of a seven-part tour through Great Britain.

In their career, the group has appeared with Carnivore , Souls at Zero , Testament , Malevolent Creation , Warrant , Korn , Clutch and The Misfits , among others , and has toured Germany and Austria with Undertow .

style

According to Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia , the band mixes heavy riffs played at medium speed with occasional vocal harmonies . Christian Graf wrote in his Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon that $ ell Out was praised primarily for its melodic songs, catchy choruses and crossover staging and had been compared to Life of Agony. Joel McIver ordered the band in his book The Next Generation of Rock & Punk nu-metal to nu metal to. Number One impresses with the powerful rhythm instruments and the melody fonts. Martin Popoff reviewed the debut album in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 3: The Nineties . He assigned it to hardcore punk , which moves on the "street level", contains hooklines and contains vocals that range from whispering to screaming. The mood of the album is partly heavy, which is reminiscent of Type O Negative, but Pist.On concentrates more on power chords and not on depressive-sounding keyboard sounds . The songs are mostly simple, whereby the electric guitars are also very present. He assigned the cover version of Shoplifters of the World Unite to Death Metal .

Matthias Mineur from Metal Hammer stated that Henry Font and Val.ium were primarily responsible for the songwriting in the beginning . He also found that the timbre of Font's singing was reminiscent of that of James Hetfield . In an interview with him, Font agreed that this had already been pointed out to him several times. In a later issue in the magazine, it was found that $ ell Out is far less aggressive than its predecessor. This was confirmed by Font in the Metal-Hammer interview: Hardcore punk had been deleted because otherwise it would have become boring. They tried to make the song material darker and this time the guitarist Burton Gans also got involved in the songwriting. However, the texts would still all be written by Font.

In his review of Number One , Michael Rensen of Rock Hard wrote that the music is energetic and difficult to describe because of its diversity. You can make comparisons to groups like Life of Agony, White Zombie , Kyuss , Galactic Cowboys , Love / Hate , Nirvana or Jane's Addiction , but none of them would really fit completely. Rensen summarized the music as follows: "Fart dry guitars duel with steamy space orgies , groovy hardcore drums meet the compositional craziness of Perry Farrell , and rough tube vocals alternate with beautiful polyphonic choruses." One issue later, Uwe wrote "Buffo." Schnädelbach says that listening to the album reminded him of Type O Negative and Life of Agony. In an interview with him, Henry Font stated that this was due to the fact that Silver had brought many of his ideas, ideas and inspirations into the production of the album. In their music the group tries to combine as many styles as possible. He would music as " Heavy - Pop " call. He himself is influenced by bands like Rush , The Cure and The Smiths . In another issue, Frank Albrecht reviewed $ ell Out and found that the sound of the predecessor has only changed slightly. Font's singing is now softer and more melodic, and Val.ium's background vocals appear as vocals. In addition, the hardcore punk influences have been avoided, instead they are approaching metal more often , which is particularly reflected in the production and the "classic metallic leads of Axeman Burton Gans". However, the songs are still designed for emotions, whereby the band succeeds in “combining melancholy , sadness, bewilderment or despair with metallic hardness”. The song material can compete with that of Life of Agony or Weissglut . In the same issue, Albrecht interviewed Font. He stated that the increased influences of classic heavy metal are mainly due to the guitarist Burton Gans, who is a fan of musicians such as Yngwie Malmsteen , Eddie Van Halen and Uli Jon Roth . Font's singing is now softer because he wanted to avoid constant comparisons with James Hetfield. In terms of text, one usually deals with small tragedies, whereby Font draws on experiences from his own life.
