Kathryn M. Edwards

Kathryn M. Edwards is a pediatrician at Vanderbilt University . She deals with infectious diseases , in particular with the development and testing of vaccines .

Edwards graduated from Grinnell College with a degree in chemistry in 1967 and a degree in pharmacology from the University of Iowa in 1969, and an MD there in 1973 as a degree in medicine. She completed her specialist training in paediatrics and infectious diseases until 1980 at the Children's Memorial Hospital of the Northwestern University School of Medicine and the Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital of the Rush University Medical School , both in Chicago . In 1980 she received her first professorship (assistant professor) for pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical School , in 1986 she became an associate professor , and in 1991 she was given a full professorship.

Kathryn M. Edwards was responsible for coordinating and conducting multicenter studies on the safety and effectiveness of various vaccines in children (and adults), including vaccines against influenza ( e.g. Influenza A virus H1N1 ), pertussis , Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae . She held advisory functions and positions on supervisory boards and scientific advisory boards of the following institutions, among others: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Institute of Medicine (IOM), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Academy of Sciences (NAS), American Pediatric Society , Infectious Diseases Society of America . She was editor of the following journals: Pediatrics , Journal of Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, Infection and Immunity , Infectious Diseases in Children, Clinical and Vaccine Immunology, Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases . She is the author of more than 480 scientific publications .

In 2008 Edwards was elected to the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine ). In 2016 she was awarded the Dr. Charles Mérieux Award for Achievement in Vaccinology and Immunology , 2018 Maxwell Finland Award , both from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases . For 2020, Edwards was awarded the John Howland Award by the American Pediatric Society .
