Infectious Diseases Society of America

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is a United States medical organization serving medical professionals, scientists, and health care professionals working in the field of infectious diseases . It was founded in 1963 (the main initiator was Maxwell Finland ) and is based in Arlington, Virginia . They have around 9,000 members (2016).

The association is committed to the development of new antibiotics and started an initiative against antibiotic resistance in 2010. They issue guidelines and recommendations for combating infectious diseases.

IDSA publishes the journals Clinical Infectious Diseases , The Journal of Infectious Diseases, and Open Forum Infectious Diseases .

They bestow the Alexander Fleming Award (formerly Bristol Award) as the highest honor .
