Love / Hate are an American hard rock band from Los Angeles , California . The band celebrated their greatest successes in the early 1990s, primarily in Great Britain. Well-known songs are Blackout In The Red Room , Why Do You Think They Call It Dope and She's An Angel .

history

The early years: 1984–1989

Love / Hate were founded in 1984 as a new wave band under the name Dataclan . Dataclan consists of Mark Hollis (vocals), Jon E. Love (guitar), Chris "Skid" Rose (bass), Rodney (keyboards) and Joey Gold (drums). In spring 1985 the band found a new singer in Jizzy Pearl with whom they recorded a 4 song EP that same year. In the course of the next few years, their style of music changed more and more to raw hard rock, which the band will later make known. This finally leads to the name change to Love / Hate in 1986.

A 5-track demo produced by Ratt bassist Juan Croucier caused a stir in the scene. The song Angel landed on the soundtrack for A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 in 1988, and the band also placed the song Why Do You Think They Call It Dope on the Critters 2 soundtrack in 1988 . Both songs will later be re-recorded for the debut album.

The successes: 1989–1992

In 1989 they finally signed a recording deal with Columbia Records. Her debut album was released in 1990 and was titled Blackout In The Red Room . The title song of the same name and Why Do You Think They Call It Dope are being rotated by MTV . In contrast to bands like Poison , Warrant or other hair-metal groups that were successful at the time , Love / Hate are loud, dirty and wild. They were therefore also assigned to the Sleaze Rock . The Jizzy Pearl microphone stand made of Budweiser cans is only part of the image.

After the album was released, Love / Hate toured as supporting act for Dio and later with AC / DC . With around 250,000 albums sold, the debut fell short of the record company's expectations. Only in Great Britain are love / hate really hot at this time. In 1991 they toured Europe as support for Skid Row , while the Evil Twin EP was released.

In 1992 the band released their second album Wasted In America and another European tour, this time supporting Ozzy Osbourne , followed. After the tour is over, the band is released from their contract by Columbia. In order to finance the next album, bassist Skid sells his Corvette . Guitarist Jon E. Love also leaves the band. Darren Householder will replace him.

The Way Down: 1993–1999

Let's Rumble was finally released in 1994 and contains a small US radio hit called Spinning Wheel . In December 1995 Love / Hate toured Europe as part of the Blind Guardian Christmas Party Tour. Headliners Blind Guardian as well as Saxon , Rage , Yngwie Malmsteen and Skyclad are part of the party . At this time Jon E. Love returned to the band to record the next album I'm Not Happy . The album flops and the band goes their separate ways without really breaking up.

Jizzy Pearl starts a solo career while Skid starts the band Skoe with Jon, Joey and a singer . The songs on the 1997 album Livin 'Off Layla are mostly from Skoe, released under the name Love / Hate. Jizzy Pearl sings on the album but doesn't finish the recordings. BulletBoys singer Marq Torien contributes additional vocals. This album also flops, although Love / Hate played again as opening act for Dio on their North American tour in spring 1998 .

In 1999, Let's Eat, the last album to date, was released under the Love / Hate banner. If Skid Rose was the main songwriter of the band to date, he is not involved in this album at all. The songs are all penned by the singer Jizzy Pearl and the drummer Joey Gold. The album is played in a. by guitarist Jon Jones, bassist Jeff Simon and session drummer Robbie Black.

Resuscitation Attempts: 2000-Today

In the years to come, the band regularly performed smaller tours and concerts with a changing line-up. Original members appear in the line up as well as new people. Jizzy Pearl is on the microphone in every incarnation.

For the last time so far, the band will tour England in 2004. In addition to singer Jizzy Pearl, guitarist Keri Kelli, bassist Robbie Crane and drummer Dave Moreno are also part of the party. In March 2005 Skid put a new love / hate song called Star In The Sun on the band's website. In addition to guitarist Jon E. Love and drummer Joey Gold, Dataclan singer Mark Hollis can be heard on it. In June of the same year, Skid formed the band Devil Party Anthems Inc with Jon and Joey .

At the beginning of 2006 singer Jizzy Pearl announced a European tour of Love / Hate for April and May. In addition to Pearl, former Quiet Riot guitarist Alex Grossi as well as drummer Dave Moreno and bassist Robbie Crane are also part of the party. Original guitarist Jon E. Love is not part of the party because of a previously made commitment, but is planned as an additional guitarist for a concert in Las Vegas. The tour is canceled after the concerts in England.

On February 24, 2007 Love / Hate will play in the original line-up at Club Vodka in Hollywood. The band is back on the boards for the first time in ten years and plays the entire debut album Blackout In The Red Room live. Then Jizzy Pearl toured a few times with a new line-up.

In December 2013, Jizzy Pearl announced that the band would split up after a tour of England in March 2014. The reason for this is that he argued with ex-members, especially John E. Love, over naming rights. The album Crucified, which he had recorded with new musicians, is now released as a solo album. John E. Love always said that this band is not about love / hate. When performing, this band was mostly promoted as Jizzy Pearl's Love / Hate.

Projects & offshoots

  • Jizzy Pearl joined the LA Guns in 1999 and played the album Shrinking Violet with them before being replaced by the returning original singer Phil Lewis. In 2000, Pearl took over the vacant singer position at Ratt, with whom he has completed several US tours to this day. Pearl is also part of the original Adler's Appetite line-up . The band consists of the former Guns N 'Roses drummer and namesake Steven Adler , the two guitarists Keri Kelli and Brent Muscat and bassist Robbie Crane. In this line up, Pearl recorded a self-titled 5-song EP and completed several tours before leaving in 2004. Jizzy Pearl has released two solo albums so far. He is also said to have been in discussion for the vacant singer positions at Mötley Crüe (1992) and Skid Row (1999). (As of 2005)
  • After Jizzy Pearl declined the offer to sing on a new Love / Hate album in 2005, Skid Rose, Jon E. Love and Joey Gold formed the band Devil Party Anthems Inc in June 2005 . The vacant position at the microphone is taken over by ex-Lucky Devil singer Jack. Her first album We Are The Party was released in September '05.
