Galactic Cowboys is an American progressive metal band from Houston , Texas . The vocals are reminiscent of the Beatles and the play of music is reminiscent of Thrash Metal bands like Anthrax . The group has been described as "probably the most melodic metal band that has ever existed in the Christian or general market". Although all members are Christians, the group does not see itself as a Christian band. The group performed with bands like Anthrax, Dream Theater , King's X and Overkill .

history

The band was formed in Houston, Texas in 1989 by bassist Monty Colvin and the Awful Truth drummer Alan Doss. After The Awful Truth broke up, singer Ben Huggins and guitarist Dane Sonnier joined the cast. In 1990 the band signed a contract with Geffen Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1991. Despite some good reviews, the band received little attention from the label due to the success of grunge bands like Nirvana with their album Nevermind . After bad sales and a couple of tours, the band returned to the studio and released the album Space in Your Face in 1993 . Through this album the band was able to establish itself on the market. The album contained two smaller hits with If I Were a Killer and I Do What I Do , which were regularly played on MTV and the radio station ZROCK. The band then separated from Geffen Records, their manager Sam Taylor and the guitarist Dane Sonnier.

In 1994 the band appeared in the film Airheads under the name Sons of Thunder. The only original song that was played in the film was Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful , which was not included on any sound carrier and was only heard as a short excerpt in the film. After the group broke up briefly, they found together again, with Wally Farkas being represented as the new guitarist and the group had a contract with Metal Blade Records . This was followed by the release of the third album Machine Fish and the EP Feel the Rage in 1996. The album The Horse That Bud Bought followed in 1997. The band recorded the album At the End of the Day in 1998, a concept album, which is considered by fans to be the best work of the band. Drummer Alan Doss left the band two weeks before the album was released. For the following tour, Erick Tatuaka joined the band as a session drummer.

The last album Let It Go was released in 2000, with each of the band members also singing. King's X drummer Jerry Gaskill, a friend of the band, was featured on the album as the drummer. In addition to their own songs, the band recorded cover versions of Kiss , Petra and Wings . In August 2009, the band played three reunion concerts in Houston, Dallas and Austin. On November 17, 2017, the band released on Mascot Records with A Long Way Back to the Moon their first album in 17 years.
