Hirax is a thrash metal band from Cypress, California . The band was formed in 1982 under the direction of singer Katon W. de Pena and in their early days played with other new bands in their region such as Metallica , Exodus and Slayer . Hirax was a clear example of the new speed / thrash metal / crossover genre. De Pena is now the only remaining member of the original line-up.

history

After releasing a few demos, the band signed a deal with Metal Blade and released their first album, Raging Violence , in 1985 . At that time the band consisted of Katon W. de Pena on vocalist, Scott Owen on guitar, Gary Monardo on bass and John Tabares on drums. 1986 John Tabares left the band and Eric Brecht (the brother of DRI singer Kurt Brecht) joined. After this change, the band released their second album Hate, Fear and Power under pressure from the label , where they only had 16 minutes for 8 tracks. In 1987 the band ended their contract with the label and independently released the demo Blasted in Bangkok . Due to tension in the band, Katon left Hirax and formed the band Phantasm with Gene Hoglan (former Dark Angel drummer) and Ron McGovney (former Metallica bassist). They released a six-track demo in 1988. After a short tour with Nuclear Assault , they broke up again. In 1989 Hirax took on former Exodus frontman Paul Baloff as a singer, but the band didn't last long.

De Pena remained active in the scene, where he worked in record stores, among other things. In 1998 he received fan mail from thrash metal fans, after which he revived Hirax in 2000. He reunited the original cast of Scott Owen, Gary Monardo and John Tabares, and that same year they released the EP El Diablo Negro . This line-up changed completely, except for Katon, so that James Joseph Hubler, Justin Lent and Nick Sellinger can be heard on the instruments on the 2001 album Barrage of Noise . Hirax only played in this line-up for a short time. Katon found completely new staff and released the album New Age of Terror in 2004 with guitarists Dave Watson and Glenn Rogers, bassist Angelo Espino and drummer Jorge Iacobellis. Because of insurmountable differences of opinion, this line-up broke up like the others. In the spring of 2009 the fourth studio album El Rostro de la Muerte ( span. "The face of death") came out. Hirax can often be seen live in the US. In 2018 the band went on a European tour again after a long break.
