Nasty Savage is an American thrash metal band from Brandon , Florida .

Band history

The band was formed in Brandon in 1983 and released the demo Wage of Mayhem in early 1984 . The XXX contained on this was released on the sampler Metal Massacre VI (1985) and Unchained Angel on Iron Tyrants . A little later, the independent label Metal Blade Records signed the band and the debut album Nasty Savage was released in 1985 , which initially received little attention in the scene. After bassist Fred Dregischan injured his hand so badly in a fight on New Year's Eve 1985 that he could no longer play, he was replaced by Dezso Istvan Bartha. In this line-up, the band recorded the second album in the Morrisound studio , which was released in 1987 under the title Indulgence . On the 1988 EP Abstract Reality Bartha had been replaced by Chris Moorhouse.

The band also gained notoriety when singer Ronnie "Nasty Ronnie" Galetti smashed televisions on his chest during live performances and threw himself in pieces. The hobby wrestler had the idea very early on because he believed he had to offer the fans an element of entertainment in addition to music.

The European tour with Exumer that followed in 1988 had to be canceled due to financial problems and an injury to singer Ronnie Galetti. Shortly after returning to the United States, bassist Chris Moorhouse and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident. His place was taken by Agent Steel's Richard Bateman and the band recorded their third studio album, Penetration Point , which was released in 1989. Immediately after the release, drummer Curtis Beeson left the band, which caused problems because his father was also the group's manager. Although a new drummer could be signed in Rob Proctor, Nasty Savage broke up in 1991. As a reason, Nasty Ronnie later gave financial problems, which had their cause in the naivete of the musicians:

“We didn't understand what it was about back then. It was enough for us to make records, touring around the world and meeting our fans. It was a great time that I really don't want to miss, but since we never had a lucrative record deal or merchandise deal, we just couldn't pay our bills. "

- Ronnie Galetti

Singer Galetti turned his back on the music business, worked as a promoter for wrestling events and as a TV host, and opened a nightclub in Tampa . In 1998 the band reformed for an appearance on the third edition of the Bang-Your-Head Festival and made a comeback in 2004 with the release of the fourth studio album Psycho Psycho . Although they performed again at Bang Your Head in 2005, it became quiet again afterwards around the band. In 2008, they made an appearance on Keep It True .

On February 11, 2011, a benefit concert took place in favor of cancer- affected drummer Curtis Beeson. In addition to Nasty Savage, the death metal bands Obituary and Deicide performed . The concert grossed around $ 10,000 in favor of Beeson's medical treatment. On May 5, 2012, Nasty Savage played the “irrevocably last” concert in the band's history.

Music genre

In 1984 the band was assigned to Power Metal or Speed Metal , "although they had nothing in common with the early Helloween , but really nothing at all". Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard describes the music on Wage of Mayhem as follows:

“A certain Mercyful Fate influence mixed with early, straight US Metal from the brands Tyrant, Witchkiller or Attacker and the Bay Area energy of Exodus , Metallica and Megadeth , and the very idiosyncratic vocal melodies of Nasty Ronnie, who doesn't really could sing, put the crown on this original mixture. "
