Sacred Blade is a Canadian progressive metal band from Vancouver , which was formed in 1981 and renamed itself Othyrworld in 2003/2004 .

history

The band was founded in 1981 by guitarist and singer Jeff Ulmer. Shortly thereafter, drummer Paul Davis and bassist Tony Moser joined the cast, which was followed by the first two demos. The first demo was recorded in the fall of 1982, while the second was recorded in January of the following year. In the summer of 1983 bassist James Channing joined the band as a new member. Shortly thereafter, Brian Slagel , owner of Metal Blade Records , became aware of the group, so that the band was included on the compilation Metal Massacre IV , which appeared in the fall of 1983, with the song The Alien . For the song, new tracks for the electric guitar and bass were recorded. After the group reached a contract with Roadrunner Records , they recorded their debut album in the fall of 1984. The band also played with Raven , Exciter and Exodus . In addition, she played as a replacement in Seattle for Metallica in the summer of 1986. The debut album was released in the same year under the name Of the Sun + Moon on Black Dragon Records . In the spring of 1987 Ted Zawadzki joined the band as the new drummer, after which the band played as an opening act for Saxon . In 1988, the band negotiated a recording deal with Epic Records . The group began work on the second album, which would be titled Seven Moonz of Xerces , before going into the studio in the fall of 1989. Due to technical problems, the recordings extended over six months. This was followed by the release of a demo that was created during these recordings. Then the recordings were continued in Ulmer's studio. In 1996 Ulmer began to re-master the debut album, so that after some delay it was re-released in 1999.

In 2003/2004 the band changed their name to Othyrworld and released the album Beyond Into the Night of Day in 2005. In March 2013 Jeff Ulmer died of a stroke .

style

The band played progressive heavy metal reminiscent of groups like Crimson Glory and Judas Priest . Especially the playing of the electric guitars by Jeff Ulmer and Will Rascan stand out on the album Of the Sun + Moon . The first two demos are based on the science fiction story The Seven Moons of Xerces, written by Ulmer .
