Raven Black Night is an Australian epic doom and heavy metal band from Adelaide that was formed in 1999.

history

The band was founded in late 1999 by guitarist and singer Jim "The White Knight" Petkoff and guitarist Rino "The Raven" Amoriono. A short time later, singer and bassist Matt "The Black Night" Spencer and drummer Jeremy "The Godfather" added to the line-up. In 2000, a first demo appeared , after which Jeremy left the group and was replaced by Adrian the Jester. After the foundation, the first appearances followed in their hometown and from 2003 to 2006 throughout Australia. At the end of 2002 Adrian the Jester left the cast and was replaced by Joe "The Duke" Toscano after Ben "The Dragon's Breath" "The Earl of Darkness Below" Sheehan took this position for a few months. With this line-up, concerts in Sydney and appearances at various festivals followed. In December 2005 the debut album Choose the Dark was released . At the end of 2006 Toscano and Spencer left the group, replacing the singer and bassist Paul "The Dead Knight" Hodgey and the returning Sheehan. In 2007 the group could be seen in Germany at the Headbangers Open Air . In the years that followed, the band held other tours and appeared at various festivals, such as Hard 'n Heavy's Summernight or the Hamburg Ballroom . In 2010/2011, Drummer Matt Enright was added to Petkoff, Amorino and bassist Chris “The Dark” Dorian Kokiousis to begin recording another album. In May 2012, the band signed a recording deal with Metal Blade Records . About this the album Barbarian Winter was released the following year .

style

According to Brian Fischer-Giffin in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal , the group play Doom Metal in the style of Candlemass and also process influences from classic metal and classic rock of the 1970s. Matthias Mineur from Metal Hammer wrote in his review of Barbarian Winter that the band sounds influenced by early Iron Maiden , Judas Priest and Saxon . The vocals are reminiscent of Geoff Tate's , although there are occasional "garish-annoying screams" in the style of King Diamond . The sound is deliberately trimmed for retro, but results in a “diffuse-nebulous mix”.
