The Makarora River is a river in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand .

Its source is in Mount Aspiring National Park on the southern flank of the Southern Alps near the Haast Pass , which forms the watershed between the valleys of the Makarora and Haast Rivers . The Makarora flows south, passes the place Makarora and flows into the north end of Lake Wanaka . The river is used for fishing and jet boating .

Especially in the middle and lower reaches, the river is an intertwined river . The New Zealand State Highway 6 follows the left bank.
