Makarora is a small settlement in the Queenstown-Lakes District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 10 km north-northeast of Lake Wanaka in the Makarora River valley and west at the foot of the McKerrow Range . The New Zealand State Highway 6 leads from Wanaka between the river and the settlement north to Haast Pass and on to Haast 45 km northwest . The next larger town is Wanaka , around 52 km south.

Local tourist offers are sightseeing flights and jetboat trips on the Makarora River. Activities in the surrounding area include fishing, hunting and mountain climbing in the national park.
