The Mount Aspiring or Tititea is a mountain in the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand . With a height of 3033 m , it represents the highest undisputed elevation on New Zealand national territory outside the Aoraki / Mount Cook massif. The Maori name Tititea means “glittering peak”.
Climbing tours can be undertaken on the mountain and in winter it offers excellent winter sports conditions . The starting point for all activities related to the mountain is the nearby village of Wanaka . Since 1964 , the entire area has been protected by the Mount Aspiring National Park, which covers an area of 3555 km² and, together with other protected areas , is named Te Wahipounamu , which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO . The Tititea / Mount Aspiring attracts many tourists every year. The mountain was also chosen for a scene for the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson .
