Sam Minaie

Sam P. Minaie (* 1983 in Reno , Nevada ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , also cello ).

Sam Minaie, who comes from an Iranian immigrant family, began learning the piano at the age of eight. At 14 he switched to the electric bass and double bass. He received several awards in the field of classical music and worked in the Reno / Tahoe area as a professional musician; first recordings in jazz were made in 2002 with the Reno Jazz Orchestra ( Bach to Blues ). He studied music on a scholarship at the University of Nevada, Reno, and earned a bachelor's degree in classical and jazz performance. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he continued his studies at the California Institute of the Arts . At CalArts he had lessons from Charlie Haden and the African Ewe drummer Alfred Ladzekpo .

In Los Angeles Minaie worked with musicians like Peter Epstein ( Abstract Realism ); In 2009 he moved to New York City. There he played u. a. with Ralph Alessi , Ravi Coltrane , Tigran Hamasyan , Peter Apfelbaum , John Ellis , David Ake , Mark Ferber , Gary Versace , Joe LaBarbera , Roy McCurdy , Bob Sheppard , Brian Lynch , John Beasley , Tootie Heath , Sara Gazarek , Larry Koonse , Patti Austin , Butch Morris , Vinny Golia , Adam Benjamin , Ben Wendel , Tim Ries , Tim Hagans , Kenny Werner , Vince Mendoza , Patrick Williams . He has also given concerts with the New Century Players Ensemble, Alfred Ladzekpo's Ewe Ensemble, Lian Ensemble , the Bill Holman Orchestra and the Clayton / Hamilton Orchestra . He also worked as a producer, sound engineer and session musician on the cello; he was also tuba player in Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra . In New York Minaie works with the Axis Trio (for which he also composes). Under his own name he released the album Heyo! in front. In the field of jazz he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 2002 and 2017, including a. also with Melody Gardot and Gavin Templeton . He can also be heard in Europe with Yaron Herman's trio . In 2020 he is a member of the Jean-Michel Pilc Trio.
