Inverted warts

Under inverted nipples (or hollow warts ) refers nipples , which are permanently or temporarily directed inward. This can apply to one or both nipples.

Emergence

Inverted warts are caused by shortened milk ducts that pull the nipple inward, or by inverting processes such as inflammation, precancerous lesions and breast cancer .

Possible problems

Inverted warts are primarily an aesthetic problem and are not associated with any medical complications. They can cause problems with breastfeeding if the warts do not straighten up and it is difficult for the baby to eat. If breastfeeding is not possible due to the nipples, the breast milk can be pumped out using an electric breast pump and given to the infant through the baby bottle . If a nipple that was previously facing outwards changes so that it is permanently facing inwards (“retraction”), this can be an indication of the presence of breast cancer and usually gives rise to further examinations.

correction

Various procedures enable a temporary or permanent correction of inverted nipples. Temporary procedures are used to facilitate the breastfeeding process and usually cause a temporary protrusion through negative pressure. Permanent procedures are carried out through a small surgical procedure and are primarily used for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes.

Temporary procedures to facilitate breastfeeding

Small pumps have been developed especially for this purpose, which make it easier to straighten the nipple using a negative pressure. There are so-called niplettes , small plastic hats that are placed on the nipple. The air is sucked out of the cone and the nipple into the cone by means of a syringe. The ambient pressure presses the cones onto the nipples and the nipples into the cones. If you wear these cones several hours a day for a few weeks (both during and before pregnancy), inverted nipples can often be improved.

Another way to get the nipple out is with breast shields , which work similarly. Both methods work in such a way that the shortened milk ducts are stretched and the nipple can then stand up. Flat warts can also be improved by these methods as a precaution, but this is often not necessary.

Permanent correction

A simple, minimally invasive method for permanent correction of inverted nipples is to apply a nipple piercing . Thanks to a special construction, the piercing can heal in such a way that the nipple - even after removing the jewelry - is permanently facing outwards.
