Robert Nathan Mathis (* 26. February 1981 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is a former American American football poker players in the National Football League (NFL). He played for the Indianapolis Colts , with whom he won Super Bowl XLI , as a linebacker .
college
Mathis attended the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University and played college football for their team, the Bulldogs . In 39 games he scored 221 tackles , 44.0 sacks , 3 interceptions and 20 forced fumbles .
NFL
In the 2003 NFL Draft , he was selected in the 5th round as a total of 138th by the Indianapolis Colts . He was used in all games in his rookie season. Together with Dwight Freeney , he formed a defender duo that was feared throughout the league for his Pass Rush . Together but also individually, the two hold a number of franchise and league records. He won the Super Bowl XLI with the Colts and was called up to the Pro Bowl six times in a row for his outstanding performance . In 2013 he was the player with the most sacks in the regular season (19.5 in total). Due to an injury to the Achilles tendon , he was canceled for the entire 2014 season. A suspension of four games because of a positive doping test was therefore no longer applicable. According to their own statements, drugs to increase fertility contained forbidden substances.
After 13 seasons with the Colts, Mathis announced his retirement from active sport on December 30, 2016.
