Hunter Dwight Smith (born August 9, 1977 in Sherman , Texas , USA ) is a retired American football player . He played as a punter in the National Football League (NFL).

Player career

Smith attended high school in his hometown and played other sports in addition to American football. He played in various positions on his football team. After graduating from school, he studied at the University of Notre Dame for their football team, the Fighting Irish. During his four-year study, he played as a punter in all 45 games for his team. Originally, Smith was supposed to accrue as a quarterback , he ran mainly as a punter and was able to achieve an average of 41.2 yards per punt. Smith moved into a total of three bowl games , all of which were lost.

In 1999 he was drawn by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round at 210th place in the 1999 NFL Draft . His best year in statistics was the 2004 season when he averaged 45.2 yards per punt. With the team he moved into the Super Bowl XLI in 2006 , where the Chicago Bears were beaten 29:17. Smith had to punt four times in the Super Bowl and achieved a gain of 162 yards. In 2009 , Smith joined the Washington Redskins . After two playing years with the Redskins, he ended his career.

Private

Smith is a devout Christian and also a musician in a band. He is married and has two sons.
