Caroline Amalie of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (born June 28, 1796 in Copenhagen ; † March 9, 1881 at Amalienborg Palace ) was the second wife of King Christian VIII. Queen of Denmark .

Life

Caroline Amalie was the daughter of Duke Friedrich Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg and Louise Auguste of Denmark , daughter of the Danish King Christian VII.

She married Christian VIII on May 22, 1815 after his divorce from his first wife in 1810 and after his abdication as King of Norway in 1814. During this time, her husband could devote himself to the sciences, namely mineralogy and geology , Caroline Amalie also excelled as a composer and wrote numerous piano pieces . In the years 1818–1822, she made numerous trips across Europe at the side of her husband. After the death of his cousin Friedrich VI. Christian VIII ascended the Danish throne in 1839 and Caroline Amalie became Queen of Denmark until his death in 1848. Their marriage was childless.

She was involved in many social and humanitarian projects, such as setting up and supporting non-profit institutions (for example as the patron of the asylum on Neuendeich ). In 1843/44 she had the Königsgarten laid out as a public park in Wyk auf Föhr , which at that time still belonged to Denmark . As an Augustenburger, she was viewed with skepticism in the conflicts with Schleswig-Holstein in Denmark, but became extremely popular in later years. Interested in religious matters, she became an important supporter of basic Victorianism .
