Granville G. Bennett

Granville Gaylord Bennett (born October 9, 1833 in Bloomingburg , Ohio , † June 28, 1910 in Hot Springs , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the Dakota Territory in the US House of Representatives as a delegate .

Early years

In 1849, Granville Bennett moved with his parents to Fulton County , Illinois . In 1855 the family moved on to Washington , Iowa . Bennett attended Howe's Academy and Washington College in Iowa. After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1859. He then began to work in his new job in his home in Washington. During the Civil War he was an officer in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865.

Political career

Granville Bennett was a member of the Republican Party . After the war, he returned to Iowa, where he was a member of the state's House of Representatives from 1865 to 1867 . Between 1867 and 1871 he was a member of the Iowa Senate . Bennett served as a Supreme Court Justice in the Dakota Territory between February 24, 1875 and August 23, 1878. In the congressional elections of 1878 he was elected to succeed Jefferson P. Kidder as a delegate in the US House of Representatives. There he completed a legislative period between March 4, 1879 and March 3, 1881. In 1880 he did not run for re-election.

Another résumé

After serving in the US Congress , Bennett moved to Deadwood in what is now South Dakota . There he initially worked as an attorney and was elected in 1892 to the probate judge of Lawrence County . Granville Bennett died in Hot Springs on June 28, 1910 and was buried in Deadwood.
