In 1845 the so-called Anti-Rent War broke out when protesters, some of whom were disguised as Indians, shot and killed Under-Sheriff Osman Steele when he and his deputies tried to collect rents totaling around $ 64 on behalf of the squire. Hundreds were arrested and two were sentenced to death, but the sentences were later commuted.
The Village of Andes belonging to the town, which had been incorporated since 1861, was dissolved on December 31, 2003 due to the vote of the voters on June 3, 2002.
