The Salmon River ( English for " salmon river") is a tributary of Lake Ontario in the counties Lewis and Oswego in the northwest of the US state New York .

The Salmon River arises east of Osceola on the Tug Hill Plateau at the confluence of its two source streams, East Fork and West Fork Salmon River . It then flows in a westerly direction. It passes Osceola and flows into the eastern end of the Salmon River Reservoir . He leaves this below the dam at the west end. 3 km further west is the small reservoir Lower Reservoir . Altmar is another 3 km downstream . Here the Salmon River turns to the west northwest. The New York State Route 13 runs south parallel to the river to Pulaski . Another 8 km further west, the Salmon River finally reaches the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. The Salmon River has a length of 71 km.

Hydropower plants

Brookfield Power operates two hydroelectric plants on the river. The Bennetts Bridge power station takes advantage of the height difference between the two reservoirs Salmon River and Lower Reservoir . The Lighthouse Hill power plant is located on the dam of the Lower Reservoir .

In the past, Atlantic salmon were mainly caught in the Salmon River . Today, silver and king salmon and steelhead trout have taken its place . These were released here and swim up the Salmon River from Lake Ontario to spawn in autumn.
