Świdwin Castle

The castle in Świdwin ( Schivelbein ) was rebuilt after the fire in 1945 and houses a regional cultural center.

The castle is located on the left bank of the Rega River in a river bend, northwest of the city.

The first castle was built by the Ascanian Margraves of Brandenburg , who bought the area around Świdwin / Schievelbein in 1258 from the diocese of Cammin at the end of the 13th century. It was a fortress on a trapezoidal outline with a residential building on the north castle wall.

The noble family of Wedel , from 1319 owners of the town of Schivelbein, began to expand the castle, but soon sold it to the Teutonic Order in 1384 due to financial difficulties . The knights transformed the castle into the seat of a bailiwick. At the end of the 14th century they demolished the old residential building, built the new east wing and the bailiwick on the northern section of the castle wall, a new castle gate with the gate tower.

In 1445 the castle was again the property of the margraves and electors of Brandenburg, now of Hohenzollern Friedrich II "the Iron"

Since 1540 the castle has belonged to the Protestant Order of St. John , who built two new wings. This created a closed inner courtyard.

After the Schivelbeiner Order of St. John was dissolved in 1808, the castle became the property of the Prussian government.

After 1945 the building was looted and burned out and rebuilt from 1962 to 1968.

The castle was registered on June 29, 1953 and August 28, 2013 under A-1191 in the list of architectural monuments of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
