Gustloff-Rennsteigwerk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gustloff-Rennsteigwerk was built in 1937/1938 as a branch of the Berlin-Suhler Waffen- und Fahrzeugwerke near Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig .

To the south of the Rennsteig train station , on an area with a siding to the Rennsteig – Frauenwald railway line , machine gun barrels were made for the German Wehrmacht . In April 1945 the production of armaments ended . This was followed by the dismantling of 386 machines (according to other sources 952 machines) and the demolition of the high-tech company at the time. Due to the strict degree of secrecy regarding the production of the Rennsteigwerk, myths are still entwined today about the forgotten and sometimes hushed up factory. A relic of the factory facilities is the Rennsteig pond , which was originally created as a process water reservoir and as a fire fighting pond .
