The Rennsteig pond is a wet biotope and small body of water in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest .
The pond is located about 350 meters southwest of the Rennsteig train station in an adjacent wooded area. The wetland was largely destroyed in July 2008 by strangers who dug a deep ditch to let the water run off in an uncontrolled manner.
Originally the pond served as a process water reservoir and as a fire fighting water pond for the former Gustloff-Rennsteigwerk , a forge branch of the Suhl- based Gustloff-Werke - Waffenwerk Suhl . After the Second World War , the place near the train station was a popular swimming pond. In the Thuringian Forest travel guide from 1988, the pond is still mentioned as a forest pool .
