Harrietstown is a town in Franklin County, New York in the United States . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , Harrietstown had 5,709 residents, most of them in Saranac Lake .
The Town of Harrietstown is in the southeast corner of the county and is south of the Town of Brighton .
history
The area around Saranac Lake was first settled around 1819. Harrietstown was created in 1841 by relocating from the Town of Duane . Towards the end of the 19th century, thanks to the mountain air, the village became the site of a sanatorium for lung patients.

According to the United States Census Bureau , Harrietstown has a total area of 553.3 km², of which 509.7 km² is land and 43.6 km² (= 7.88%) is water. Harrietstown is within Adirondack Park .
The southern city limit forms the border with Hamilton County and Essex County , which is also adjacent to the east.
While New York State Route 3 runs east-west through Harrietstown, while New York State Route 30 and New York State Route 86 cross the district in north-south direction, NY-3 and NY-30 have from the To the west of the neighboring Town of Tupper Lake , the route initially shares a common path, before the two routes separate again to the west of Upper Saranac Lake . The New York State Route 186 , which also runs in the area of the Town, connects NY-3 and NY-86.
The Raquette River drains the southwestern part of Harrietstown, the geography of which is shaped by numerous lakes.

Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Harrietstown was inhabited by 5,575 people. The population density was 10.9 people per km². There were 3417 housing units at an average of 6.7 per km ². Harrietstown's population was 97.22% White , 0.52% Black or African American , 0.34% Native American , 0.65% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.22% said to be of other races and 1.06% named two or more races. 1.06% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Harrietstown were distributed to 2,544 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18. 38.8% of households were married, 9.4% had a female head of household without a husband, and 47.3% were not families. 39.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 14.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
